SUMMARY:Royal Reigns Supreme at the 27th Battle of the Kings
DESCRIPTION:Royal College\, led by Thisun Jayawardana\, secured the Battle of the Kings trophy after a lapse of two years\, scoring 23 points out of the maximum possible 30\, edging out defending champs D S Senanayake College (21.5). In denying D S Senanayake College a ‘three-peat’ (they won the last two editions of the event)\, Royal carved her name on the trophy for the record 13th time.\n  \nThe Battle of the Kings is the longest running inter-school team event organised by a school in the country and is the only such tournament that is internationally rated. It is one of the most popular events in the school circuit in the country’s chess calendar. The tournament was organized by the Royal College Chess Club with the support of the Advisory and Management Committee for Chess and other Board Games.\nThe 27th edition of the Battle of the Kings\, held in the College Hall in early April drew 39 schools from all parts of the country. Dharmasoka College\, Ambalangoda did justice to their reputation as one of the strongest girls teams in the country\, scoring the highest number of points (18) among the schoolgirls’ teams taking part in the tournament and thereby retaining the trophy they won the previous year. They edged Anula Vidyalaya (17.5) to second place. Ferguson High School\, Ratnapura also scored 17 but had to be satisfied with a third place finish following the tie-break. \nHaving lost to top ranked Nalanda College\, led by three time National Champion and International Master Susal de Silva\, in the penultimate round\, Royal’s changes hinged on the outcome of the final round match between Nalanda and defending champions D S Senanayake College. At that point\, Nalanda were ahead by a single point (19) with Royal one point behind (18) and ‘D S’ a further half point away (17.5). \nD S Senanayake finished strong\, beating Nalanda 4-2 while Royal trounced Dharmasoka (Girls) 5-1. ‘D S’ remained unbeaten but  less than stellar performances against relatively weaker teams in the earlier rounds cost them dearly. \nRoyal were represented by Manith Liyanage\, Thisun Jayawardana\, Isara Dahanayake\, Anuhas Pinnagoda\, Nithwara Wimalagunasekara\, Lisara Kodithuwakku and Warana Illankoon. \nRoyal’s Under 15 team\, competing as ‘Royal B’ finished 6th (19 points) while Royal ended in 9th place. \nMurtaza Esufally\, Group Director\, Hemas Holdings PLC and a former junior chess player at Royal College\, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and distributed the main awards at the Prize Giving held at the Royal College Skills Centre following the conclusion of the tournament.\n\n\n\n\nRoyal College chess captain Thisun Jayawardana receiving the winner’s trophy from Chief Guest Murtaza Esufally. Also in the picture are the Teacher-in-Charge of Chess\, Mrs Enoka Kulawardane and Vice Principal Mr Krishantha Silva\n\n\n\n\n\n The winning team from Left to Right: Warana Illankoon\, Nithwara Wimalagunasekara\, Lisara Kodituwakku\, Thisun Jayawardana (Captain)\, Isara Dassanayake\, Anuhas Pinnawela and Manith Liyanage.
