The Royal College Under-19 Tennis Team triumphed over Ananda College with a decisive 3-0 victory in the Interschool All-Island Tennis Tournament, reclaiming the championship title for the first time since 2019.
Leading the charge in the first singles, Methvan Wijemanne delivered an impeccable performance, overwhelming his opponent 6-0, 6-1. The first doubles pairing of Jamal Sabry and Kavish Maddumage followed with a strong showing, outplaying their rivals 6-3, 6-2. But the most gripping contest came in the second singles match, where Ashmal Bilal of Royal College faced Yuthila Hettiarachchi of Ananda College. While Ananda College was seen as the favorite on paper, Ashmal rose to the occasion, demonstrating remarkable poise and determination. In a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, Ashmal sealed a hard-fought victory with a score of 7-6, 7-5, delivering the championship to Royal.
In the semifinals, Royal College bested St. Peter’s College 3-0, and earlier in the group stages, they claimed a significant win over S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia, avenging their previous loss at the E.F.C. Pereira Memorial Tennis Encounter. This victory not only crowns an impressive season but also builds strong momentum for next year’s encounter.
The Royal College Under-19 Tennis “B” Team also showcased their strength, overcoming Thurstan College 3-2 in the Division 2 Interschool All-Island Tennis Tournament to claim the championship title. This victory completes a clean sweep for Royal College in the Under-19 age category, affirming their dominance in school tennis.
Riding this momentum, the boys will wrap up their season this weekend with the Royal–St. Peter’s Annual Tennis Encounter at the St. Peter’s College courts.
We couldn’t be prouder of the boys for their resilience, dedication, and hard work. Here’s to their continued success and to the bright future of Royal College tennis.
Floreat!
